Caprice Spencer Rothe has been blessed to be able to make her living
in the Arts for over 40 years, as a designer, scenic artist, dancer, pantomime,
choreographer, film movement specialist, prop creator, clown, director,
and arts educator. Caprice began performing as a ballerina, drawn, not
to the Swans and Princesses, but to the Fooles and Villains. During the
20 years she made her primary living as a Mime and Theatrical Clown (Artist
in Residence: Performing Tree – LAUSD), Caprice continued her interest
in Graphics (BA – UCLA), often donating logo and marketing designs to
the theater community.
She’s been designing on the MAC since 1984, teaching
in the MAC Lab at Long Beach City College where she was also the Movement,
Mime & Mask Instructor. Ms. Rothe joined the staff of the So. Coast Rep
Youth Conservatory, teaching Mime and Mask Performance for 14 years and
there made her professional directing debut. During this time she attended
Post Grad courses to receive a Community College Theater Arts Teaching
Credential, made three Hollywood "alien" movies, joined SAG, worked with
the Bard in the Yard on numerous productions, started a freelance Graphic
Design business and a lifetime collaboration with a Sculptor in a venture
called ABOUT FACE which marries performing and visual artists creating
MASQUES.
A shattered ankle curtailed her Mime career, but encouraged Caprice
to focus on directing and producing original plays with the Long Beach
Playhouse New Works Festival and the Primetime Players, the Long Beach
Senior Citizen acting troupe.
